This is a large overgrown cemetery of unmarked graves, 3/10 of a mile from the South end of the Albemarle Sound Bridge on Route 32. It lies about 25 yards from the road between a brick home and a frame house. The Tarkington Family by Edna L. Moore indicates there is only a footstone with the initials M. T. This would be Mahala Spruill Tarkington born April 1822 and still living in the 1900 Census. It would be fair to assume that her husband, James Tarkington, 1860-1 Dec 1884 is buried with her. Mahala and James had 3 children born between 1862 and 1866 who died young and are most likely buried here.
Mrs. Moore's research also indicates that Mary Jane Tarkington, born April 14, 1864 died Dec.17, 1944, who married Addle Judson Blow is also interred here. She was a daughter of James and Mahala. It is not known if James' parents, William Tarkington and Amelia Phelps are buried here. Charles Tarkington, the son of a slave born 1854 - died May 14, 1931 and owned by James Tarkington is also buried here. Info: Vernon L. Everett, Jr.
