514 YORK FAMIPY CEMETERY (Nurse Rd & Eldora Rd)
Location - Off Eldora Road near intersection with Nurse Rd.
Coordinates: 36d 21m 30.7s N; 80d 35m 22.7s W Click here for Online Maps
Directions: From Pilot Mountain at intersection of US 52 and Hwy 268 take Hwy 268 west for 6.5 miles to Eldora Rd (at Pine Hill Friends Church). Turn right on Eldora Rd. for 0.6 miles to just after the Nurse Rd. intersection on the left. The cemetery is in the woods on the left of Eldora Rd. at the base of a very large Pine tree about 50 feet to the right of an overhead electrical line cut.
Based on the notation for the cemetery on Plat 18, Page 106, the graves are about 100-ft. south of a big oak tree in a group of trees. GPS Accuracy is 15 ft. The elevation is 1140-ft.
Prior to 1959 the property was owned by J.W. Harbour. His heirs sold it to Gratsie and Nina Sawyers per 221 / 240 with no mention of a graveyard. Per Book 847, Page 308, Nina sold 53.316 acres from 221 / 240 and a small family cemetery is referenced.
The only identifiable grave is the marker for Margaret York. We might assume her husband and other family members are buried here. The other graves are marked with upright field stones.
Thanks to Bryan Hubbard who took pictures and met David at the site for the survey. Surveyed in November 2023 by David Hawkins with help from Bryan Hubbard. Photos by Bryan Hubbard in 2023.
